1 Nephi 1:Intro
An account of Lehi and his wife Sariah and his four sons, being called, beginning at the eldest, Laman, Lemuel, Sam and Nephi.The Lord warns Lehi to depart out of the Land of Jerusa- lem because he prophesieth unto the people concerning their iniquity and they seek to destroy his life.He taketh three days' journey into the wilderness with his family.Nephi taketh his brethren and returns to the Land of Jerusalem after the record of the Jews. The account of their sufferings.They take the daughters of Ishmael to wife.They take their families and depart into the wilderness. Their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness.The course of their travels. They come to the large waters.Nephi's brethren rebelleth against him. 1 Nephi 1:1
I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore, I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father,And having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days,Yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God,Therefore, I make a record of my proceedings in my days;Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews, and the language of the Egyptians;
1 Nephi 4:6
And it came to pass that I was overcome because of my afflictions, For I considered that mine afflictions were great above all because of the destruction of my people, for I had beheld their fall.
1 Nephi 5:25
And it came to pass that Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael did begin to murmur exceedingly because of their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness, And also my father began to murmur against the Lord his God; Yea, and they were all exceeding sorrowful, even that they did murmur against the Lord.

And is not this our afflictions great?
Therefore, who wondereth that they are in bondage and that they are smitten with sore afflictions!
And the king saith unto him: "I being grieved for the afflictions of my people, I caused that forty and three of my people should take a journey into the wilderness, That thereby they might find the Land of Zarahemla, That we might appeal unto our brethren to deliver us out of bondage;
And yet I, being overzealous to inherit the land of our fathers, collected as many as were desirous to go up to possess the land and started again on our journey into the wilderness to go up to the land; But we were smitten with famine and sore afflictions, for we were slow to remember the Lord our God;
And except they repent in sackcloth and ashes and cry mightily to the Lord their God, I will not hear their prayers, Neither will I deliver them out of their afflictions.'
'And it shall come to pass that I will smite this My people with sore afflictions, yea, with famine and with pestilence; And I will cause that they shall howl all the day long;
And now the afflictions of the Nephites were great; And there was no way that they could deliver themselves out of their hands, for the Lamanites had surrounded them on every side.
And it came to pass that the people began to murmur with the king, because of their afflictions, And they began to be desirous to go against them to battle,
And they did humble themselves, even in the depths of humility; And they did cry mightily to God, Yea, even all the day long did they cry unto their God, that He would deliver them out of their afflictions.
And it came to pass that so great were their afflictions that they began to cry mightily to God.
And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: "Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto Me; And I will covenant with this My people and deliver them out of bondage;
And this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for Me hereafter, And that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit My people in their afflictions."
And he also read the account of Alma and his brethren and all their afflictions from the time they left the Land of Zarahemla until the time they returned again.
And now all these things did Alma and his fellow laborers do which were over the church, Walking in all diligence, Teaching the word of God in all things, Suffering all manner of afflictions, Being persecuted by all those who did not belong to the church of God;
And so great were their afflictions that every soul had cause to mourn; And they believed that it was the judgments of God sent upon them because of their wickedness and their abominations- Therefore, they were awakened to a remembrance of their duty,
Now this was a great cause for lamentations among the people; While others were abasing themselves, succoring those who stood in need of their succor, Such as imparting their substance to the poor and the needy, feeding the hungry, And suffering all manner of afflictions for Christ's sake, which should come according to the spirit of prophecy, looking forward to that day; Thus retaining a remission of their sins,
And now it came to pass that Alma, having seen the afflictions of the humble followers of God and the persecutions which were heaped upon them by the remainder of his people, and seeing all their inequality, He began to be very sorrowful; Nevertheless, the Spirit of the Lord did not fail him.
Nevertheless, I do not desire that my joy over you should come by the cause of so much afflictions and sorrow which I have had for the brethren at Zarahemla;
For behold, my joy cometh over them after wading through much afflictions and sorrow.
And He shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind,
And when the last had spoken unto them, the power of God was upon Alma and Amulek and they arose and stood upon their feet; And Alma cried, saying: "How long shall we suffer these great afflictions, O Lord?
Now these are the circumstances which attended them in their journeyings, for they had many afflictions-
Yet ye shall be patient in longsuffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples unto them in Me, And I will make an instrument of thee in My hands unto the salvation of many souls."
And they also had suffered hunger, thirst and all kind of afflictions; Nevertheless, they were patient in all their sufferings.
Now this was wisdom in the Nephites; As the Lamanites were an enemy to them, they would not suffer their afflictions on every hand, And also that they might have a country whither they might flee according to their desires.
For many of them, after having suffered too much loss and so many afflictions, they began to be stirred up in remembrance of the words which Aaron and his brethren had preached to them in their land;
"Now when our hearts were depressed and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us and said: 'Go amongst thy brethren the Lamanites and bear with patience thine afflictions, And I will give unto thee success.'
And we have suffered all manner of afflictions; And all this that perhaps we might be the means of saving some soul, And we supposed that our joy would be full if perhaps we could be the means of saving some.
And this is the account of Ammon and his brethren- their journeyings in the Land of Nephi, their sufferings in the land, their sorrows and their afflictions, and their incomprehensible joy, and the reception and safety of the brethren in the Land of Jershon;
"O Lord, wilt Thou grant unto me that I may have strength that I may suffer with patience these afflictions which shall come upon me because of the iniquity of this people?
Wilt Thou grant unto them that they may have strength that they may bear their afflictions which shall come upon them because of the iniquities of this people?
And the Lord provided for them, that they should hunger not, neither should they thirst, Yea, and He also gave them strength that they should suffer no manner of afflictions, save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ.
And now when Alma heard this, he turned him about, his face immediately toward him, and he beheld with great joy, For he beheld that their afflictions had truly humbled them and that they were in a preparation to hear the word;
Yea, Thou didst hear my cries and wast angry with mine enemies, And Thou didst visit them in Thine anger, with speedy destruction; And Thou didst hear me because of mine afflictions and my sincerity.
'And it is because of Thy Son that Thou hast been thus merciful unto me; Therefore, I will cry unto Thee in all mine afflictions, for in Thee is my joy, For Thou hast turned Thy judgments away from me because of Thy Son.'"
Yea, I know that these things were taught unto you bountifully before your dissension from among us, And as ye have desired of my beloved brother that he should make known unto you what ye should do because of your afflictions- And he hath spoken somewhat unto you to prepare your minds, Yea, and he hath exhorted you unto faith and to patience,
"And now my beloved brethren, I would exhort you to have patience and that ye bear with all manner of afflictions, That ye do not revile against those who do cast you out because of your exceeding poverty, lest ye become sinners like unto them, But that ye have patience and bear with those afflictions, with a firm hope that ye shall one day rest from all your afflictions."
I would that ye should do as I have done in remembering the captivity of our fathers, For they were in bondage and none could deliver them except it was the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, And He surely did deliver them in their afflictions.
And now, O my son Helaman, behold, thou art in thy youth, And, therefore, I beseech of thee that thou wilt hear my words and learn of me; For I do know that whomsoever shall put his trust in God shall be supported in their trials and their troubles and their afflictions and shall be lifted up at the last day;
And I have been supported under trials and troubles of every kind, yea, and in all manner of afflictions, Yea, God hath delivered me from prisons and from bonds and from death, Yea, and I do put my trust in Him and He will still deliver me;
And now my son Shiblon, I would that ye should remem- ber that as much as ye shall put your trust in God, Even so much ye shall be delivered out of your trials, and your troubles, and your afflictions, And ye shall be lifted up at the last day.
But it came to pass that when they saw the danger and the many afflictions and tribulations which the Nephites bore for them, They were moved with compassion and were desirous to take up arms in the defense of their country;
And Helaman feared lest by so doing, they should lose their souls; Therefore, all those which had entered into this covenant were compelled to behold their brethren wade through their afflictions in their dangerous circumstances at this time.
But in the twenty and sixth year, when they saw our afflictions and our tribulations for them, they were about to break the covenant which they had made and take up their weapons of war in our defense;
Yea, and they were depressed in body as well as in spirit, For they had fought valiantly by day and toiled by night to maintain their cities; And thus they had suffered great afflictions of every kind.
"And now behold, I say unto you that myself and also my men and also Helaman and his men have suffered exceeding great sufferings- Yea, even hunger, thirst and fatigue and all manner of afflictions of every kind.
"But behold, now the Lamanites are coming upon us, And they are murdering our people with the sword, yea, our women and our children, Taking possession of our lands, and also carrying them away captive, Causing them that they should suffer all manner of afflictions; And this because of the great wickedness of those who are seeking for power and authority, yea, even those Kingmen.
And these are the words which he received: "I, Pahoron, which art the chief governor of this land, do send these words unto Moroni, the chief captain over the army. "Behold I say unto you, Moroni, that I do not joy in your great afflictions, yea, it grieves my soul.
"But behold, there are those who do joy in your afflictions, Yea, insomuch that they have risen up in rebellion against me, and also those of my people which are Freemen. "Yea, and those which have risen up are exceeding numerous;
Now it came to pass that when Lehi and Moroni knew that Teancum was dead, they were exceeding sorrowful; For behold, he had been a man which had fought valiantly for his country, yea, a true friend to liberty, And he had suffered very many exceeding sore afflictions;
And many were softened because of their afflictions, insomuch that they did humble themselves before God, even in the depth of humility.
Yea, they did remember how great things the Lord had done for them- That He had delivered them from death, and from bonds and from prisons, and from all manner of afflictions; And He had delivered them out of the hands of their enemies-
And thus we see that except the Lord doth chasten His people with many afflictions, Yea, except He doth visit them with death and with terror and with famine and with all manner of pestilences, They will not remember Him.
And notwithstanding the many afflictions which they shall have, And notwithstanding they shall be driven to and fro upon the face of the earth and be hunted and shall be smitten and scattered abroad, having no place for refuge, The Lord shall be merciful unto them;
3 Nephi 1:57
And thus ended the fifteenth year. And thus were the people in a state of many afflictions; And the sword of destruction did hang over them, insomuch that they were about to be smitten down by it, And this because of their iniquity.
3 Nephi 3:14
Some were lifted up in pride, and others were exceeding humble; Some did return railing for railing, while others would receive railing and persecution and all manner of afflictions and would not turn and revile again, but were humble and penitent before God.
And it came to pass that I did go forth among the Nephites and did repent of the oath which I had made, that I would no more assist them; And they gave me command again of their armies, for they looked upon me as though I could deliver them from their afflictions.
