"And it came to pass that the Lord of the vineyard went His way and hid the natural branches of the tame olive tree in the nethermost parts of the vineyard, Some in one and some in another, according to His will and pleasure.
And now it came to pass that after some years had passed away, there came a man among the people of Nephi whose name was Sherem.
Even if it so be by the power of His holy arm, That it might be brought forth at some future day unto the Lamanites, that perhaps they might be brought unto salvation;
"And now it shall come to pass that whosoever shall not take upon them the name of Christ must be called by some other name; Therefore, he findeth himself on the left hand of God.
And the king himself did not trust his person without the walls of the city unless he took his guards with him, fearing that he might by some means fall into the hands of the Lamanites.
And he caused that his people should watch the land round about, That by some means they might take those priests that fled into the wilderness which had stolen the daughters of the Lamanites and that had caused such a great destruction to come upon them;
Yea, seeing great inequality among the people- Some lifting themselves up with their pride, despising others, Turning their backs upon the needy and the naked, and those which were hungry, and those which were athirst, and those which were sick and afflicted-
And at some period of time they will be brought to believe in His word and to know of the incorrectness of the traditions of their fathers;
Nevertheless, there were some among them which thought to question them, That by their cunning devices they might catch them in their words, That they might find witness against them, That they might deliver them to the judges,
And now it came to pass, before the Nephites could raise a sufficient army to drive them out of the land, They had destroyed the people which were in the City of Ammonihah, and also some around the borders of Noah, and taking others captive into the wilderness.
And some say that he is not dead, But others say that he is dead and that he stinketh and that he ought to be placed in the sepulcher; But as for myself, to me he doth not stink."
And now the people began to murmur among themselves, Some saying that it was a great evil that had come upon them, or upon the king and his house because he had suffered that the Nephite should remain in the land.
And there were some which said that Ammon was sent by the Great Spirit to afflict them because of their iniquities, And that it was the Great Spirit that had always attended the Nephites, which had even delivered them out of their hands,
Now when the queen saw the fear of the servants, she also began to fear exceedingly, lest there should some evil come upon her,
"But behold, my beloved brethren, we came into the wilderness, not with the intent to destroy our brethren, but with the intent that perhaps we might save some few of their souls.
And we have suffered all manner of afflictions; And all this that perhaps we might be the means of saving some soul, And we supposed that our joy would be full if perhaps we could be the means of saving some.
Yea, and this is my glory, that perhaps I may be an instrument in the hands of God to bring some soul to repentance; And this is my joy.
Yea, they durst not make use of that which is their own, lest they should offend their priests which do yoke them according to their desires, And hath brought them to believe- by their traditions, and their dreams, and their whims, and their visions, and their pretended mysteries- That they should-if they did not do according to their words-offend some Unknown Being, which they say is God, A Being which never hath been seen nor known, which never was nor never will be."
For I do not mean that ye-all of you-have been compelled to humble yourselves, For I verily believe there are some among you which would humble themselves, let them be in whatsoever circumstances he might-
Now there are some that have understood that this state of happiness and this state of misery of the soul before the resurrection was a first resurrection;
And now my son, I have somewhat to say concerning the restoration of which has been spoken, For behold, some have wrested the scriptures and have gone far astray because of this thing;
And there were some who died with fevers, which at some seasons of the year was very frequent in the land-
That perhaps he might take again, by stratagem or some other way, those cities which had been taken out of their hands, And that he also would fortify and strengthen the cities round about which had not fallen into the hands of the Lamanites.
Or that they might by some means flatter them out of their strongholds, that they might gain advantage over them and take again the City of Mulek.
And now it came to pass that the armies of the Lamanites on the West Sea South-while in the absence of Moroni on account of some intrigue amongst the Nephites, which caused dissensions amongst them- had gained some ground over the Nephites, Yea, insomuch that they had obtained possession of a number of their cities in that part of the land;
They could not be taken in their snares, Yea, they would not partake of their wine, Yea, they would not take of wine, save they had firstly given to some of the Lamanite prisoners;
And if it is not so, behold, we fear that there is some faction in the government that they do not send more men to our assistance; For we know that they are more numerous than that which they have sent;
And it came to pass also in this year that there were some dissenters which had gone forth unto the Lamanites; And they were stirred up again to anger against the Nephites.
And now it came to pass in the forty and third year of the reign of the judges, There was no contention among the people of Nephi, save it were a little pride which was in the church, Which did cause some little dissensions among the people, Which affairs were settled in the ending of the forty and third year.
And he beheld that they did lift their eyes to heaven; And they were in the attitude as if talking or lifting their voices to some Being which they beheld.
Now it came to pass that thus they did stir up the people to anger against Nephi and raised contentions among them; For there were some which did cry out: "Let this man alone! For he is a good man and those things which he saith will surely come to pass except we repent;
Therefore, he began again to speak unto them, seeing that he had gained favor in the eyes of some, insomuch that the remainder of them did fear;
And there were some of the Nephites which did believe on the words of Nephi; And there were some also which believed because of the testimony of the five, For they had been converted while they were in prison.
And now there were some among the people which said that Nephi was a prophet; And there were others which said: "Behold, he is a god, For except he was a god, he could not know of all things;
And it came to pass that in the eightieth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, There were a certain number of the dissenters from the people of Nephi which had some years before gone over unto the Lamanites and took upon themselves the name of Lamanites,
And I would that all men might be saved; But we read that in that great and last day there are some which shall be cast out, Yea, which shall be cast off from the presence of the Lord,
"Some things they may have guessed right among so many; But behold, we know that all these great and marvelous works cannot come to pass which hath been spoken."
"But behold, we know that this is a wicked tradition which has been handed down unto us by our fathers to cause us that we should believe in some great and marvelous thing which should come to pass, But not among us, but in a land which is far distant, a land which we know not;
And they will, by the cunning and the mysterious arts of the evil one, work some great mystery which we cannot understand, which will keep us down to be servants to their words, and also servants unto them, For we depend upon them for to teach us the word;
3 Nephi 1:5
But there were some which began to say that the time was past for the words to be fulfilled which were spoken by Samuel the Lamanite;

But the people believed not the words of the prophets, but they cast them out, And some of them they cast into pits and left them to perish.
And it came to pass that there were many of them which did perish by the way; Nevertheless, there were some which fled into the Land Southward.
And He showed not Himself unto them until after they had faith in Him; Wherefore, it must needs be that some had faith in Him, For He showed Himself not unto the world;
Wherefore, I write a few more things, contrary to that which I had supposed- For I had supposed not to have written any more- But I write a few more things that perhaps they may be of worth unto my brethren the Lamanites in some future day, according to the will of the Lord.
