SUMMARY

 

Class notes Outreach November  4, 2018

The summation of the story is that the great regathering occurs when the Jews return to Christ.  And they do.

2 Nephi 7:5 Wherefore, as I said unto you, it must needs be expedient that Christ (for in the last night the angel spake unto me that this should be his name) should come among the Jews, among those who are the more wicked part of the world;

2 Nephi 11:27 And when that day shall come, that they shall believe in Christ, and worship the Father in his name, with pure hearts, and clean hands, and look not forward anymore for another Messiah, then, at that time, the day will come that it must needs be expedient that they should believe these things,

2 Nephi 11:24 And behold, it shall come to pass, that after the Messiah hath risen from the dead, and hath manifested himself unto his people, unto as many as will believe on his name, behold, Jerusalem shall be destroyed again: for wo unto them that fight against God and the people of his church.
25 Wherefore, the Jews shall be scattered among all nations; yea, and also Babylon shall be destroyed; wherefore, the Jews shall be scattered by other nations;
26 And after they have been scattered, and the Lord God hath scourged them by other nations, for the space of many generations, yea, even down from generation to generation until they shall be persuaded to believe in Christ, the Son of God, and the atonement, which is infinite for all mankind;
27 And when that day shall come, that they shall believe in Christ, and worship the Father in his name, with pure hearts, and clean hands, and look not forward anymore for another Messiah, then, at that time, the day will come that it must needs be expedient that they should believe these things,
28 And the Lord will set his hand again the second time to restore his people from their lost and fallen state.
29 Wherefore, he will proceed to do a marvelous work, and a wonder among the children of men

2 Nephi 11:32 And unto the convincing of them that they need not look forward anymore for a Messiah to come,

2 Nephi 11:78 And as I spake concerning the convincing of the Jews, that Jesus is the very Christ, it must needs be that the Gentiles be convinced also, that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God; and that he manifesteth himself unto all those who believe in him, by the power of the Holy Ghost; 79 Yea, unto every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, working mighty miracles, signs and wonders, among the children of men, according to their faith.
80 But behold, I prophesy unto you concerning the last days; concerning the days when the Lord God shall bring these things forth unto the children of men.
81 After my seed, and the seed of my brethren shall have dwindled in unbelief, and shall have been smitten by the Gentiles;
82 Yea, after the Lord God shall have camped against them round about, and shall have laid siege against them with a mount, and raised forts against them;
83 And after they shall have been brought down low in the dust, even that they are not, yet the words of the righteous shall be written, and the prayers of the faithful shall be heard, and all those who have dwindled in unbelief, shall not be forgotten; 84 For those who shall be destroyed shall speak unto them out of the ground, and their speech shall be low out of the dust, and their voice shall be as one that hath a familiar spirit;
85 For the Lord God will give unto him power, that he may whisper concerning them, even as it were out of the ground; and their speech shall whisper out of the dust.

2 Nephi 12:85 And it shall come to pass that the Jews which are scattered, also shall begin to believe in Christ: and they shall begin to gather in upon the face of the land;

2 Nephi 15:11 And now, my beloved brethren, and also Jew, and all ye ends of the earth, hearken unto these words, and believe in Christ; and if ye believe not in these words, believe in Christ.

Mormon 1:88 And also that the Jews, the covenant people of the Lord, shall have other witness besides him whom they saw and heard, that Jesus whom they slew, was the very Christ, and the very God;

Mormon 2:41 And behold they shall go unto the unbelieving of the Jews; and for this intent shall they go; that they may be persuaded that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God;

The process starts with the Gentiles and Joseph.

But notice the condition among Gentiles AND Jews:
Notice in last days, both nations of the Jews and Gentiles drunken with iniquity.

This is what the Lord has to work with.  This describes Jacob 3 when nothing in the vineyard is producing fruit.  The original and wild Branches that bring forth no good fruit.

2 Nephi 11:116 But behold, in the last days, or in the days of the Gentiles; yea, behold all the nations of the Gentiles, and also the Jews, both those who shall come upon this land, and those who shall be upon other lands; yea, even upon all the lands of the earth; behold, they will be drunken with iniquity, and all manner of abominations;

What do these have in common besides a common history of latter day saints and Book of Mormon?  They all think or thought they were the right and true church.  (Can’t be, because we know we are, right?) They all thought THEY were going to build Zion.
Nephi wraps his arms around all these calling them GENTILES.

THIS IS WHY JESUS SAYS 'IF THE GENTILES REPENT, THEY SHALL BE NUMBERED AMONG THIS PEOPLE (THE REMNANT OF JOSEPH) AND ASSIST, NOT LEAD.

Gentile cleansing is prophesied but that is not the end of the story. That clears the way for the story to begin.

Why is destruction prophesied upon the Gentile nations?

2 Nephi 7:22 Wherefore, for this cause, that my covenants may be fulfilled, which I have made unto the children of men, that I will do unto them while they are in the flesh, I must needs destroy the secret works of darkness, and of murders, and of abominations;

3 Nephi 9:101 Yea, wo be unto the Gentiles, except they repent, for it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Father, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots, and I will cut off the cities of thy land and throw down all thy strongholds;

(so covenants could be fulfilled).

Special concern for Gentiles:  that they would mock the words of the Nephites.  Limited writings given to us—why? To try our faith.
He shows the Gentiles OUR WEAKNESS.

 

3 Nephi 12:3 
1 And now there can not be written in this book, even a hundredth part of the things which Jesus did truly teach unto the people; but behold the plates of Nephi do contain the more part of the things which he taught the people;

2 And these things have I written, which are a lesser part of the things which he taught the people; and I have written them to the intent that they may be brought again unto this people, from the Gentiles, according to the words which Jesus hath spoken.And when they shall have received this, which is expedient that they should have first, to try their faith, and if it shall so be that they shall believe these things, then shall the greater things be made manifest unto them.

3 Nephi 12:4 And if it so be that they will not believe these things, then shall the greater things be withheld from them, unto their condemnation

Ether 6:14 And I was about to write more, but I am forbidden; but great and marvelous were the prophecies of Ether, but they esteemed him as nought, and cast him out, and he hid himself in the cavity of a rock by day, and by night he went forth viewing the things which should come upon the people

Ether 2:1 And now I, Moroni, have written the words which were commanded me, according to my memory; and I have told you the things which I have sealed up; therefore touch them not, in order that ye may translate; for that thing is forbidden you, except by and by it shall be wisdom in God.

Ether 1:109 Come unto me, O ye Gentiles, and I will shew unto you the greater things, the knowledge which is hid up because of unbelief.

Ether 5:23 And I said unto him, Lord, the Gentiles will mock at these things because of our weakness in writing; for Lord thou hast made us mighty in word by faith, but thou hast not made us mighty in writing;

Ether 5:26 Thou hast also made our words powerful and great, even that we can not write them; wherefore, when we write, we behold our weakness, and stumble because of the placing of our words; and I fear lest the Gentiles shall mock at our words.

Ether 5:27 And when I had said this, the Lord spake unto me, saying, Fools mock, but they shall mourn; and my grace is sufficient for the meek, that they shall take no advantage of your weakness; and if men come unto me, I will shew unto them their weakness.  29 Behold, I will shew unto the Gentiles their weakness, and I will shew unto them that faith, hope, and charity, bringeth unto me the fountain of all righteousness.
30 And I, Moroni, having heard these words, was comforted, and said, O Lord, thy righteous will be done, for I know that thou workest unto the children of men according to their faith;

 

A holy city is built here by Joseph.  Power of Heaven comes down.  This is the ‘second time.’

The word is preached. (3 Nephi 10)

Israel comes to Christ.  Calls out his people of the world.

His people are those who call on Christ, vs those who do not.

Signs that they would know:  When the work goes forth, the gathering of Jews to Israel will have occurred, the restoring of Joseph to the truth has already started.
The arguing, bickering, splintering in the church established among the Gentiles, none of it is described.  Not the big story.  Nowhere in the story are the Gentiles put at the center of the universe, other than to say that because the Lord would pour out the Holy Ghost, the Gentiles of this land would be mighty above all.

Gentile nations reject.

Joseph rises to spiritual power, among Gentiles like a lion

The work of the Gentiles brings Joseph to Knowledge of Christ and Covenants.

QUESTION:
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT WE KNOW WHO RECEIVED WHICH LANDS FOR THEIR INHERITENACE?

ANSWER:

BECAUSE THOSE LANDS BECOME THE GATHERING PLACES IN THE LAST DAYS—THOSE PEOPLE RETURN TO BUILD THE RIGHTEOUS CITIES OF THE NEW JERUSALEM ON THIS LAND, AND THE JERUSALEM OF OLD IN ISRAEL.

 

The result of Joseph’s blessing is that a holy city is built on this land. Repentant Gentiles and some of House of Israel assist. (3 nephi 10, Ether 6)

All are blessed equally for coming to the covenant, but the covenants were made because of promises to the linage.

The work of Joseph brings Israel to Knowledge.

The process of Israel turning to Christ shocks the world. Gathering occurs, not in haste.
Highways cast up.

Gathering to Israel awes the world.  This may be gatherings to both Zions, but if the parallel metaphor of Israel being the dying tree restored holds, then the event that shocks the world will be gathering to Israel. The Old Jerusalem becomes a Holy City once they turn (return) to Christ.

Ezekiel 11:17 Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord God; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.

Gathering is not in haste.

3 Nephi 9:80 For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the Lord will go before you; and the God of Israel shall be your rearward.

3 Nephi 10:8 And they shall go out from all nations; and they shall not go out in haste, nor go by flight; for I will go before them, saith the Father, and I will be their rearward. And then shall that which is written come to pass.
9 Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child; for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the Lord.
10 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thy habitations; spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;
11 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.
12 Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed; neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame; for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.
13 For thy maker, thy husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall he be called.
15 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.
16 In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.
18 For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.
22 In righteousness shalt thou be established; thou shalt be far from oppression, for thou shalt not fear; and from terror, for it shall not come near thee
27 Yea, a commandment I give unto you, that ye search these things diligently; for great are the words of Isaiah.
28 For surely he spake as touching all things concerning my people which are of the house of Israel; therefore it must needs be that he must speak also to the Gentiles.

While restoration tradition emphasizes gathering to Zion to avoid calamity and destruction’ the whole story contains a larger picture with a magnificent ending.  The world returns to Christ.

Isaiah 31:4 For thus hath the Lord spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them; so shall the Lord of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.

The culmination of the covenant:  Jesus reigns over the earth spiritually, socially, politically.  Isaiah’s word is fulfilled ‘How Beautiful upon the mountain are the feet of Him who publishes peace and proclaims that God is reigning on earth.’  The news to the world will be that Jesus is Head.  When that day is fulfilled every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ.

 

Jerusalem shall be inhabited by His people after covenants are fulfilled?

3 Nephi 9:85 Then shall this covenant which the Father hath covenanted with his people, be fulfilled; and then shall Jerusalem be inhabited again with my people, and it shall be the land of their inheritance.
80 For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the Lord will go before you; and the God of Israel shall be your rearward.
81 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.
82 As many were astonished at thee; (his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men,)
83 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
84 Verily, verily, I say unto you, All these things shall surely come, even as the Father hath commanded me.

But notice that ZION is the fulfilling of one of the covenants but not the end.

86 And verily, I say unto you, I give unto you a sign, that ye may know the time when these things shall be about to take place, that I shall gather in from their long dispersion, my people, O house of Israel, and shall establish again among them my Zion.

89 Verily, verily, I say unto you, When these things shall be made known unto them of the Father, and shall come forth of the Father, from them unto you

3 Nephi 13:54 And now behold, I say unto you, that when the Lord shall see fit, in his wisdom, that these sayings shall come unto the Gentiles, according to his word, then ye may know that the covenant which the Father hath made with the children of Israel, concerning their restoration to the lands of their inheritance, is already beginning to be fulfilled;

Mormon 2:42 That the Father may bring about, through his most beloved, his great and eternal purpose, in restoring the Jews, or all the house of Israel, to the land of their inheritance, which the Lord their God hath given them, unto the fulfilling of his covenant,

Mormon 4:26 And he that shall breathe out wrath and strifes against the work of the Lord, and against the covenant people of the Lord, who are the house of Israel, and shall say, We will destroy the work of the Lord, and the Lord will not remember his covenant which he hath made unto the house of Israel, the same is in danger to be hewn down and cast into the fire; for the eternal purposes of the Lord shall roll on, until all his promises shall be fulfilled.

Ether 6:12 And they are they who were scattered and gathered in from the four quarters of the earth, and from the north countries, and are partakers of the fulfilling of the covenant which God made with their father Abraham.

Moroni 10:28 And awake, and arise from the dust, O Jerusalem; yea, and put on thy beautiful garments, O daughter of Zion, and strengthen thy stakes, and enlarge thy borders for ever, that thou mayest no more be confounded, that the covenants of the eternal Father which he hath made unto thee, O house of Israel, may be fulfilled.

The Lord comes out fighting for Israel:

Hosea 1:10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

 

3 Nephi 9:69 And it shall come to pass that the time cometh, when the fullness of my gospel shall be preached unto them, and they shall believe in me, that I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and shall pray unto the Father in my name. 70 Then shall their watchmen lift up their voices; and with the voice together shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye.
71 Then will the Father gather them together again, and give unto them Jerusalem for the land of their inheritance.
72 Then shall they break forth into joy -- sing together ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the Father hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.
73 The Father hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of the Father; and the Father and I are one.

Was against, then for you.

Jeremiah 21:5 And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.

In a little wrath, but not anymore

Isaiah 54:8 In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.

The Lord will go before, the lord will be the rearward…not by haste, gathered the.

A highway setup

Isaiah 11:16 And there shall be a highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.
The gathering will be so great, the Jews will forget about Egypt’s exodus.
Jeremiah 23:3 And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.

3 Nephi 10:15 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.
Isaiah 52:15 So shall he gather many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him; for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
Isaiah 54:7 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.

Ezekiel 39:24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27 When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28 Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen; but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them anymore there.
29 Neither will I hide my face anymore from them; for I have poured out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God.
